Manchester United become world's first billion-dollar football brand

According to a 2015 report by Brand Finance, Manchester United F.C. is the world's most valuable football brand, surpassing Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

The Old Trafford club's brand is estimated to be worth over $1.2bn.

The report, which measures a team's 'brand power' and its ability to monetise its global recognition, shows United have been working much better off-field than they have on it.

"However ‘brand strength’ only reflects the notional potential of the brand. For a club’s brand to generate income a business team that is as star-studded and tactically brilliant as the team on the pitch is required."

The Red Devils are one of the most widely supported football teams in the world today.

Founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910.
